This true manual turntable is a no nonsense table and for an entry level machine it's price/performance ratio is quite something and is even better these days as the PL12 can be had for just a bit of pocket money. The PL12D-ii features classic 70's styling with a tone arm light enough to get the best from the quality cartridges of the time. With its heavy aluminium platter independently sprung from a solid wood base, to minimize vibration, a high-torque DC motor and whisper quiet belt driven operation, you'll really appreciate your vinyl collection. Because it is a manual turntable, the classic S-shaped tone arm is free of any mechanical encumbrance or problems from any auto mechanism. There is virtually nothing to go wrong!
The controls are two simple levers. One, which controls the drive speed for either 33 or 45 records, and a second which controls the on/off and up/down cueing of the tone arm. The precision cueing is viscous damped. A simple knob dials in the proper amount of anti-skate pressure based upon the tracking force which is easily set by balancing the tone arm to a neutral position and then dialling in the desired amount of tracking force. There is also an additional weight for lateral balance adjustment (which is missing from mine). The tonearm that is fitted to the PL-12D-ii has interchangeable headshells which is is useful for those owners like myself that have a number of cartridges lying around the place. Pretty much any of the standard SME style headshells can be used with this deck.
The Pioneer PL-12D-ii is finished with a beautifully grained walnut base and a smoke tinted acrylic dust cover with spring-loaded hinges (designed to stay in place at any angle above the unit so you don't have to put it all the way up or balance it while you are placing the disk on the platter
One of the more unusual features of the PL-12D-ii is the 'over-hang checker', a marker device that can be pulled up under the cartridge as a guide to the position the cartridge in the headshell. This is very a useful feature and quite surprisingly quite an accurate one too.
